The Tata Communications AI Investment focuses on boosting India’s digital infrastructure by laying a fibre network that links India’s key data centers and AI regions. Tata Communications has committed to investing $450 million in the AI Super Highway in order to enhance data connectivity amidst increased demand for AI adoption. Tata Communications is targeting to deploy close to 10,000 km of AI ready fibre infrastructure across the Indian landscape in 3-5 years connecting data centres, technology firms and enterprise clients in stages.
Tata Communications to Build AI Network Worth $450M
The $400 million to $450 million investment will underpin the rollout of high-speed, low-latency connectivity for IT and other critical systems along major business and technology corridors.
As more companies deploy AI, they require rapid and dependable connectivity to move huge volumes of data between data centres. Tata Communications intends to connect all of their centers to its own global infrastructure by laying new fiber between them. The network will support hyperscalers, cloud service providers, AI platforms, global capability centers, banks, and other businesses that require high capacity digital connectivity.
Which Indian cities will the network connect?
Tata Communications will build the AI Super Highway in a phased manner across the three largest technology and data center markets in India. The initial phase will link Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, and Chennai. These locations are emerging focal points for enterprise technology, the development of cloud infrastructure, and data centres. Subsequent phases will take the network to other data center hubs such as Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar, Jamnagar and the Gujarat International Finance Tech City (GIFT City). Additionally, the company will establish links between domestic data centre clusters and cable landing stations. This will enable the country’s digital and AI cloud computing infrastructure to be integrated with other jurisdictions.
Why does AI need faster data-center connectivity?
AI systems require a quantity of data to learn and use, they are stored and processed in data centers for service delivery. Where data centres exist in multiple sites, stable connectivity for transferring data is needed. Connectivity that is slow or unreliable may impair the operation of AI applications and other digital services. Large-capacity fiber networks can be a valuable tool in cutting down on latency and scaling up to meet the demands of cloud platforms and data-driven enterprises. The network will offer high bandwidth, low latency, and resilient connectivity to our customers’ high-performance digital workloads.
Potential investment to benefit India’s digital infrastructure
The demand is not limited to data centres. The rapid growth of AI and cloud computing industries in India is also leading to expanding requirements for infrastructure outside of the data centres. Organizations require resilient networks linking their computing facilities to their clients, offices, and overseas markets. Tata Communications believes the data-center-to-data-center connectivity market in India has the potential to be worth more than US$1 billion in the medium term. This investment is targeting a share of this market as companies ramp up their digital businesses. The project will be financed by the company’s operating cash flows, said reports. Meanwhile, its phased deployment will enable the company to focus on network build-out in areas of higher customer demand and new data-centre locations.
What comes next for Tata Communications’ AI Super Highway?
This proposed network is a significant increase in the infrastructure that will enable India’s AI ecosystem to flourish. Once built, how well it performs will be determined by customer adoption, demand and whether the company can provide the speed, capacity and robustness that users need across the range of its network. For their part, as they increase the use of AI and cloud services, data centers could become more crucial for workspaces within India or across countries. The initiatives will enhance the capacity of these services, and also put Tata Communications in a better position to fight for more of the nation’s data center connectivity business.
