The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has announced plans to set up the Benjamin Gupta School of Physical AI, described as India’s first dedicated academic school for the field.
The Agreement
The institute signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with alumnus and philanthropist Vinod Gupta and the IITKGP Foundation USA. The school is named in memory of Gupta’s late son, Benjamin.
Who Is Paying
The total investment is ₹35 crore. Of this, ₹12.5 crore will come from the Vinod Gupta family and ₹10 crore from an alumnus who wishes to stay anonymous. IIT Kharagpur will provide the rest, according to Indian Opinion.
What Is Physical AI?
Most AI today works with data, algorithms and digital tools. Physical AI aims to understand, predict and control real-world systems, such as machines, buildings and the human body. The idea is to build AI that respects the laws of physics, which should make it more reliable and safe.
What The School Will Study
It will house the Department of AI and work on physics-informed machine learning, digital twins, intelligent robotics and autonomous systems. The target sectors are manufacturing, energy, agriculture and healthcare. It will combine AI with physics, engineering, biological systems and medicine.
Timeline
Academic programmes are expected to start in the upcoming session, subject to approvals, according to Indian Opinion. Course details have not been finalised in the reports I found.
What The Director Said
Director Suman Chakraborty said the school will help India move from using AI technology to creating intelligent physical systems.
Why It Matters
Robotics and automation are growing quickly, and companies are looking for engineers who can connect AI models with machines. A dedicated school gives IIT Kharagpur a base to train them.
For now, this is a signed agreement and a plan. How fast the school hires faculty and opens courses will show how soon it can deliver.
