To aid users in seeing if an artist is an actual person rather than an artificial one, Spotify has launched a new ‘Verified by Spotify’ badge (indicated by a Green Checkmark). Due to the rapid increase of AI-generated music, many users were having difficulty figuring out if a track they listen to was created by a person or a machine.
Why Spotify Introduced This Badge
The rise of AI-generated music has created confusion for listeners regarding how many of these songs seem to have been authored by human musicians. A number of AI-created songs can effectively sound just like they had been created by a human musician (even when no musician or human composer was involved). Spotify’s verification process helps clarify this distinction by identifying the true identity of the artist and demonstrating their legitimate presence on social media.
How the Verification Works
To receive a badge, the artist must go through the vetting process in which Spotify will verify that the artist has been consistently listened to, is active on social media with links to those pages from their account, and has other indicators of a professional artist, including concerts, tours, and merchandise. These indicators will prove to Spotify that the artist has a legitimate life outside of simply uploading music.
Who Gets Verified—and Who Doesn’t
According to Spotify, more than 99% of artists that people are actively looking for will be verified with this type of badge; however, they cannot be simply profiles with artificial intelligence-created personas or 100% synthetic music. There would be essentially a division created between artists who create content as a human being and artists that generate their content purely through machines.
Limitations and Concerns
Despite its benefits, the system is not flawless. The badge confirms that an artist is human, but it does not clarify whether their music uses AI tools. Today, many artists use AI in production, making the boundary less clear. There are also concerns about fairness. Independent or emerging artists without a strong online presence or live performance history may struggle to qualify. Critics believe this could unintentionally favour established names over new talent.
A Step Toward Transparency
In order to keep pace with a rapidly changing music landscape, Spotify has introduced a new badge that is intended to help them demonstrate that they are adapting, while at the same time demonstrating both innovation and authenticity for the benefit of listeners by creating additional confidence about what they are listening to.
