MeitY Releases New AI Governance Framework for India: India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has launched a landmark AI Governance Framework to support the safe, and responsible use of artificial intelligence across the country. This framework shows how India’s commitment to balancing cutting-edge innovation with strong standards.
Putting People First with Ethical AI
At the heart of the framework is a human approach built on the principle of “Do No Harm.” It sets out seven guiding principles that represents trust, fairness, accountability, inclusivity, and transparency to ensure AI benefits everyone without compromising safety or rights.
Strengthening Data Privacy and Security
The guidelines call for data management and privacy protections is aligned with India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act. AI systems must handle data securely, respect user consent, and maintain data sovereignty, helping build confidence in AI applications.
Clear Accountability and Oversight
These organizations will monitor risks, audit systems, and enforce compliance, making sure AI is both transparent and accountable. MeitY proposes a layered governance structure with dedicated bodies like the AI Governance Group and the AI Safety Institute to oversee AI deployment.
Encouraging Innovation and Inclusion
While ensuring safety, this framework supports innovation by regulating sandboxes, open research, and public-private partnerships. It also prioritizes making AI accessible to startups and MSMEs.
A Dynamic Action Plan for the Future
The framework outlines situations action for the short, medium, and long term, including capacity building, establishing risk classification systems, launching incident reporting, and developing liability frameworks. This roadmap prepares India to lead globally in ethical AI development.
